SPECIALTIES

I enjoy helping athletes of all abilities work towards their goals, whether on the track, roads, or trails, and across distances from the 800m to multi-stage ultras and everything in between. From “soon-to-be” runners to elite competitors, young athletes and masters runners, I coach with love and passion, rooted in a strong science and research-backed foundation. With education in exercise physiology, strength training, and sports nutrition, I offer runner-specific strength training and nutrition programs too.

PHILOSOPHY

I love running and I love being a part of something bigger than myself. No one achieves their potential alone, and coaching transforms the individual sport of running into a team activity. I have a background in exercise physiology, sports nutrition and psychology, direct experience as an athlete, and a wide variety of interests that have influenced my approach to coaching.
I believe in macrocycles of training that always include the key ingredients of endurance, strength, speed-endurance, and power, but may vary in the quantity and specific application of each thing depending on the time of season, and the athlete in front of me. Coaching is both an art and a science, and my background in exercise physiology allows me to apply the latest research and performance science to my athletes’ training.

From a wide-angle view, I believe in coaching the athlete as a whole person and in meeting them where they are at today; rather than trying to fit the athlete into a predefined framework or ascribing to either a high volume or low volume approach, I design training around the individual athlete and their unique needs. There are many ways to get athletic results that cause physical, emotional, or mental damage to the athlete. Through experiences on multiple different running teams, I have witnessed athletes crumble under toxic coaching cultures, succumb to career ending injuries and mental illness, and walk away from the sport broken and unfulfilled. It breaks my heart to see my sport, something that has brought me so much joy and opportunity, harm others so greatly. Systemic changes need to be made to coaching, especially at the collegiate level, and I am driven to be the change I want to see.

Coaching is a collaboration not a dictatorship, and effective listening is an underappreciated skill foundational to a successful coach-athlete relationship. The art of coaching depends upon being receptive to athletes’ feedback and life stressors, and I establish open channels of communication with all my athletes. Improving as a distance runner takes time and patience, consistent effort applied daily. Injuries and illness, both mental and physical, disrupt this improvement trajectory, and I commit to never sacrificing an athlete’s long-term health and wellbeing for short-term success. A happy and healthy runner is a faster runner, and through my coaching I intend to share the joy that running has brought me with every athlete I work with and the communities I am involved in; after all, if you’re not having fun, why are you doing it?

COACHING EXPERIENCE

My coaching career began in 2017 with an in-person local couch-2-5K run club. Most of the runners were parents and/or older athletes looking to develop a positive relationship with running. Seeing these athletes smiling with the satisfaction of doing something they didn’t think they could, recognizing the strength and resilience they had inside all along, and building community through running was so rewarding and sold me on coaching: I have not looked back since! No matter one’s ability, these same benefits are on offer to every athlete, connecting the everyday runner with the elite.

In the years since, I have mostly coached 1:1 adult athletes virtually, helping them explore and exceed their limits on the run and beyond. I have a soft spot for coaching younger athletes, ensuring their first running experience is a good one, and have volunteered with kids’ running programs like Girls on the Run. My athletes have set PRs and achieved goals across distances from the 800m to multi-stage ultras and everything in between, as well as more general health and fitness goals like improving their cardiovascular and metabolic health. Beyond running, I’ve coached strength for endurance athletes, alongside providing individualized, 1:1 sports nutrition consults.

At the other end of the spectrum, I have coached aspiring elite athletes and NCAA Division I student-athletes during their summer breaks, as well as working 1:1 with high schools looking to run in college.

ABOUT ME

As a young kid I was never a runner. In fact, I totally sucked. But the desire to prove to myself that I didn’t have to suck, alongside the support of my local running community, motivated 14-year old me to take action. A few years of hard work and consistent workouts later, I had earned a full scholarship to run at the NCAA Division I level while getting a degree in Exercise Physiology. I am now pursuing a Master’s in Exercise Physiology from Eastern Michigan University, and am still exploring my own athletic potential.

I am incredibly passionate about women’s sport, sports science, health, and increasing representation of women in research and high levels of performance. Personally and professionally, I hope to further both of these areas. I have my hand in a lot of different pots, including sports science/ research into athletes, podcast production, run coaching, and different forms of content creation for a variety of amazing organizations all centered around endurance sports, exercise science, performance, sports nutrition, and coaching. I want everyone to feel safe and supported in sports, find belonging in the community, and realize the amazing benefits–mental, physical, emotional, social, etc–we know and love.

BIG INFLUENCES

Coaching is both an art and a science, and my background in exercise physiology allows me to apply the latest research and performance science to my athletes’ training. Moreover, my coaching is influenced by previous coaches and mentors, including Matt Fitzgerald, Megan and David Roche, Liz McColgan Nuttal, and Matt Daniels.

I lean heavily on the science and top researchers for specific areas like female athlete health, sports nutrition, hydration, supplementation, and injury insights.
